Co-starred 6 times but still full of secrets!?
Yamamoto Yusuke x Daito Shunsuke
A hilarious talk unfolds between the King of Ouran High School Host Club’s Tamaki and the Ruler of the Shadows・Kyoya. After building a relationship through 6 times of co-starring together will they show a side that can not be seen in the drama?
Yamamoto Yusuke = Y
Daito Shunsuke = D
Yusuke will keep making air-headed statements until everyone has retorted back
Y: We’ve worked together 6 times and I know his temper and I feel at ease when I work with Daito-kun.
D: Me too. Yusuke’s someone I can rely on.
Y: Especially this time because it’s a love comedy drama. There is no correct way to making a comedy more interesting. Therefore when we act, we really care about what the people around us think.
D: Yeah Yusuke, you often ask me, “How was that?” When I answer, “That was great!” or “It was the best!!” you would become happy and act well in the next scene.
Y: I’m like a child. (laughs)
D: Yeah, but in this drama Yusuke has to enjoy it the most. That’s the point that makes Tamaki shine. If the central character shines, then the people around him will be influenced and do a great job.
Y: But on set I’m so high tensioned. Even when I go home, my energy still remains very high. With the high energy, it’s very hard to fall asleep.
D: Yeah I know what you mean. A while ago in the play for Gekidan☆Shinkansen, I played an okama. At the peak of my high tension I was stabbed and killed. Although on stage I was dead, I still felt very hyper inside and it continued on till I went home. I could not sleep for a whole week.
Y: But if you don’t sleep, you body cannot take it right.
D: That’s right. Which is why I try to rest my body. When I go home I would lie on my bed.
Y: Me too. I cut down on going out at night as soon as I started filming for Ouran. But still I could not understand why I couldn’t fall asleep.
D: It’s only because you are full of adrenaline. All night I kept thinking “I can’t sleep, I can’t sleep” and when I realized it, it was morning. Feeling rather light-headed, I went on set and became high tensioned again. The cycle kept repeating itself.
Y: Yeah. But it’s rather mysterious that once on set my sleepiness all disappeared. Especially this time, everyone’s so high tensioned. Masaya, Manpei & Chinpei-chan as well.
D: It’s Shinpei (laughs).
Y: Chiba-chan, Haruhi and Ryusei-kun are younger but there is no wall between our ages. We joke with each other and they always listen to my stupid stories.
D: Yeah Yusuke, when you make an air-headed statement you will look at someone. You then have the “tsukkonde, tsukkonde”* look on your face. And if no one reacts, you will keep making air-headed comments until someone retorts back. *retort back
Y: That is so true (laughs).
During filming, Yusuke lightly smacked my buttocks.
D: This time everyone gets along well huh.
Y: Yeah. Everyone has opened up their hearts, except you Daito (laughs).
D: What do you mean by that? (laughs)
Y: When Haru-chan’s not here, the 5 guys will get together and chat about work and about falling in love right?
D: Yeah that’s true.
Y: I told everyone about falling in love. Masaya, Ryusei-kun, Manpei & Kanpei-kun as well.
D: It’s Shinpei (laughs).
Y: Yet all you did was happily sit on the side and listen to our stories.
D: Yeah but that’s the kind of position Kyoya holds right? He watches over everyone. That’s why I thought it was okay for me to just sit and listen.
Y: No, you were always like that. From the time of debut 5 to 6 years ago. We first met at a photo-shoot for “Teen” magazine and then co-starring together in “Himitsu no Hanazono”.
D: But we didn’t have any scenes together.
Y: No, but we definitely talked about falling in love in “Teen” magazine.
D: We probably did.
Y: I was 18 years old and you were 20 years old. It felt kind of cool listening to an older person talk about falling in love.
D: That sounds weird (laughs).
Y: But a year later, you became very secretive.
D: Actually I’m someone who does not like to talk about their love life, whether it’s to a girl or a boy. I think it’s embarrassing to talk about them.
Y: And then during “Tumbling” you became even colder.
D: What are you saying? The readers will misunderstand.
Y: One day after filming I thought I’d treat everyone to yakiniku. But since Daito-kun still had to film I asked you to join up with us after. But you replied that you still had another job to go to and rejected my invitation so quickly.
D: But I really wanted to go. I still had another job so I could do nothing about that. I was doing the asa-dora for NHK as well at that time.
Y: You busyness had soared huh(laughs).
D: It did not soar. I remembered that. We were filming for episode 3. That day Yusuke had finished very early and I still had a very serious scene remaining. The actual filming started and I was all prepared to start my scene when you were all ready to go home, you came up to me and lightly smacked my buttocks. I made a sound without thinking and had to retake the scene. I couldn’t believe what you did.
This time we also have the role as otoosan and okaasan
D: Well jokes show the closeness of our relationship (laughs). And well this time in the host club, I play the role of the host club’s mother while you play the father.
Y: Yes. Kyoya and Tamaki trust each other like a husband and wife does. There was that episode in which we had to look for Kuma-chan. Tamaki had asked Kyoya to help but Kyoya replied “if you hand out the flyers the girls would be happier.” Your expressions felt so motherly while it looked like I was a father who couldn’t do the right thing.
D: True, that dialogue did feel like something a couple would say. There is a scene that I really like. When Tamaki said that Haruhi, “you are my daughter, my daughter,” it sounded very fatherly. When Hikaru and Kaoru heard this they asked “if this was a line of defence.” I really liked the expression on Tamaki’s face back then. It’s kind of hard to explain that expression when your manly emotions were seen through by those two. And I like the word “yobousen (line of defence)”
Y: This time there are so many lively lines. They are everywhere.
D: Especially for Tamaki. And Yusuke, you have so many lines that can embarrassing if you make a mistake but also many serious lines. Tell me, what’s your motivation?
Y: Usually I’m pretty spazzy or can do stupid things, but when I have a camera aimed at me, my switch gets turned on. For example, I have a switch for when I have a photo-shoot for a magazine, I have a different switch when I go on variety shows. You learn how to use them in different ways.
D: Aww, so there is a Tamaki switch?
Y: Isn’t there one for Kyoya as well?
D: I hope the two of us will continue to have our switches turned on until the very end.
Y: Yes I agree.
D: When we finish the filming, lets have a BBQ at Yusuke’s house for the ending party. We’ll bring the ingredients.
Y: Yes yes (laughs).
